What Eaton County Traffic Court Records Show

An Eaton County traffic case record documents the full history of a case from citation to final outcome. It starts with the stop: the date, the officer, the charge, and the location. As the case moves through the court, every docket entry is logged. That includes appearances, motions, hearings, and the final disposition.

The disposition tells you how the case ended. It shows whether the person paid the fine, requested a hearing, or failed to respond. If a hearing took place, the result is recorded. For criminal traffic matters, the record includes the charge details, any plea, and sentencing. For civil infractions like speeding, it shows whether the person was found responsible and what fine was assessed. The case file does not show driver's license points. Points are a separate matter handled by the Michigan Secretary of State.

Certified copies carry the court seal and are needed for legal purposes. Plain copies are fine for personal use. Regular copies cost $1.00 per page. Certified copies cost $10.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each page after that. Transcript fees under MCL 600.2543 are $3.75 per page for the original and $0.90 per page for copies, with a $50.00 minimum.

Responding to a Traffic Ticket in Eaton County

You have 14 days to respond when you receive a civil infraction ticket in Eaton County. The ticket lists your options and the deadline. Ignoring it is not an option. A missed deadline means the court enters a default judgment. Points go on your driving record through the Secretary of State and your license may be suspended.

Three responses are available. First, admit responsibility and pay the listed fine. This is the fastest way to close the case. Second, admit with an explanation. You write to the magistrate, describe your situation, and ask for consideration. The magistrate may reduce the fine, but points are still recorded. Third, deny responsibility and ask for a hearing. Michigan offers two hearing types. An informal hearing is before a magistrate with no attorneys. A formal hearing is before a judge, the officer must appear, and attorneys are allowed. If you lose an informal hearing, you have 7 days to request a formal one.

Michigan courts cannot hold traffic cases under advisement or offer programs that make the charge disappear in exchange for completing a class. The court has no authority to change the points assigned to a violation. That is set by state law. Driver improvement courses approved by the court may allow the Secretary of State to remove points through a separate administrative process. Ask the Eaton County District Court clerk what options are available to you.

The first $20 in fees is waived for those who qualify as indigent. Court records held by the court clerk are separate from county FOIA requests and must be requested directly from that office.

Points and Your Driving Record

Michigan's point system is run by the Secretary of State, not the courts. When the Eaton County District Court reports a conviction or civil infraction finding to the state, the Secretary of State adds points to your driving record. Courts have no power to lower or waive those points. The values are fixed by state law and apply equally in every Michigan county.

OWI under MCL 257.625, reckless driving, fleeing a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident, and vehicular manslaughter each carry 6 points. Speeding 16 or more mph over the limit is 5 points. Going 11 to 15 mph over is 4 points. Speeding 1 to 10 mph over, running a red light, improper passing, and failing to stop for a school bus each add 3 points. All other moving violations are 2 points. Reaching 12 points within two years triggers a Secretary of State reexamination, which can lead to license restrictions or suspension.

To see your current point total and full driving record, contact the Michigan Secretary of State at michigan.gov/sos or call (517) 322-1624. For e-filing options in Eaton County, check MiFILE to see if the district court is enrolled.
