Search Eaton County Traffic Records Online
Two tools are available for searching Eaton County traffic court records online. The first is MiCOURT, the free statewide case search system. Go to micourt.courts.michigan.gov/case-search/ and select Eaton County. Search by name, case number, or citation number. MiCOURT covers civil infraction traffic cases and criminal traffic matters that are public record.
The second tool is Eaton County's own circuit case search portal at eatoncounty.org/165/Circuit-Case-Search. This covers circuit court cases, which include felony-level traffic offenses like OWI causing serious injury or death, and reckless driving resulting in injury. For standard moving violations, speeding tickets, and civil infractions, MiCOURT is the right tool.
MiCOURT shows case type, filing date, charge, status, docket entries, and any scheduled hearings. Some records are not visible. Sealed cases and those expunged under Clean Slate do not appear. Cases resolved under MCL 333.7411 or HYTA are also hidden. Dates of birth are restricted per MCR 1.109 since April 1, 2022. If you can't find a case online, contact the court clerk directly.

Eaton County Circuit Case Search
Eaton County offers a standalone circuit court case search at eatoncounty.org/165/Circuit-Case-Search. This tool covers felony traffic cases and higher-level matters handled at the circuit court level. If you are dealing with a criminal traffic charge in Eaton County, this search is a direct way to pull up circuit court filings without using the statewide MiCOURT system.
Results from the circuit search include case numbers, party names, charges, docket events, and status. The circuit court in Eaton County shares the Charlotte courthouse location with the district court. If you are not sure whether your case is at the district or circuit level, look at the citation you received. Criminal traffic cases involve an arrest and formal charges. Civil infractions do not. Note: The circuit case search covers Eaton County circuit court records only. For district court traffic cases, use MiCOURT.
The Eaton County Circuit Case Search portal shown above lets you look up circuit court case records directly from the county website, covering more serious traffic offenses handled at the circuit level.
What Eaton County Traffic Court Records Show
An Eaton County traffic case record documents the full history of a case from citation to final outcome. It starts with the stop: the date, the officer, the charge, and the location. As the case moves through the court, every docket entry is logged. That includes appearances, motions, hearings, and the final disposition.
The disposition tells you how the case ended. It shows whether the person paid the fine, requested a hearing, or failed to respond. If a hearing took place, the result is recorded. For criminal traffic matters, the record includes the charge details, any plea, and sentencing. For civil infractions like speeding, it shows whether the person was found responsible and what fine was assessed. The case file does not show driver's license points. Points are a separate matter handled by the Michigan Secretary of State.
Certified copies carry the court seal and are needed for legal purposes. Plain copies are fine for personal use. Regular copies cost $1.00 per page. Certified copies cost $10.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each page after that. Transcript fees under MCL 600.2543 are $3.75 per page for the original and $0.90 per page for copies, with a $50.00 minimum.
Responding to a Traffic Ticket in Eaton County
You have 14 days to respond when you receive a civil infraction ticket in Eaton County. The ticket lists your options and the deadline. Ignoring it is not an option. A missed deadline means the court enters a default judgment. Points go on your driving record through the Secretary of State and your license may be suspended.
Three responses are available. First, admit responsibility and pay the listed fine. This is the fastest way to close the case. Second, admit with an explanation. You write to the magistrate, describe your situation, and ask for consideration. The magistrate may reduce the fine, but points are still recorded. Third, deny responsibility and ask for a hearing. Michigan offers two hearing types. An informal hearing is before a magistrate with no attorneys. A formal hearing is before a judge, the officer must appear, and attorneys are allowed. If you lose an informal hearing, you have 7 days to request a formal one.
Michigan courts cannot hold traffic cases under advisement or offer programs that make the charge disappear in exchange for completing a class. The court has no authority to change the points assigned to a violation. That is set by state law. Driver improvement courses approved by the court may allow the Secretary of State to remove points through a separate administrative process. Ask the Eaton County District Court clerk what options are available to you.

The first $20 in fees is waived for those who qualify as indigent. Court records held by the court clerk are separate from county FOIA requests and must be requested directly from that office.
Note: FOIA applies to government records held by the county. Court records are covered by MCR 8.119 and related court rules, which the court clerk handles directly.
Points and Your Driving Record
Michigan's point system is run by the Secretary of State, not the courts. When the Eaton County District Court reports a conviction or civil infraction finding to the state, the Secretary of State adds points to your driving record. Courts have no power to lower or waive those points. The values are fixed by state law and apply equally in every Michigan county.
OWI under MCL 257.625, reckless driving, fleeing a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident, and vehicular manslaughter each carry 6 points. Speeding 16 or more mph over the limit is 5 points. Going 11 to 15 mph over is 4 points. Speeding 1 to 10 mph over, running a red light, improper passing, and failing to stop for a school bus each add 3 points. All other moving violations are 2 points. Reaching 12 points within two years triggers a Secretary of State reexamination, which can lead to license restrictions or suspension.
To see your current point total and full driving record, contact the Michigan Secretary of State at michigan.gov/sos or call (517) 322-1624. For e-filing options in Eaton County, check MiFILE to see if the district court is enrolled.
