Search Grand Traverse County Traffic Records Online
Two free tools let you search Grand Traverse County traffic court records online. The first is the 86th District Court's own case search at districtcourt.co.grand-traverse.mi.us/c86_cases/. This is a direct local resource covering Grand Traverse County cases only. The second option is Michigan's statewide MiCOURT system at micourt.courts.michigan.gov/case-search/. MiCOURT results show case type, filing date, charge description, current status, docket entries, and any scheduled hearings. You can filter by case type to focus on traffic matters specifically. Some records are excluded from public view. Sealed cases don't appear. Cases removed under Michigan's Clean Slate expungement law are gone from results. Drug dismissals under MCL 333.7411 and Holmes Youthful Trainee Act cases are also hidden. Per MCR 1.109, dates of birth have not been visible in public court records since April 1, 2022. What Grand Traverse County Traffic Records Show
A traffic case record at the 86th District Court covers the full history of that case from the first citation to the final outcome. The file starts with the stop: the date, the location, the officer who issued the ticket, and the specific charge. Every step that follows gets logged as a docket entry. That includes notices sent, responses received, hearings scheduled or held, and any orders the court issued along the way.
The disposition ends the file. For a civil infraction, it shows whether the person was found responsible, paid without a hearing, or defaulted. If a hearing took place, the result is recorded. Fine amounts and payment status appear in the record. For misdemeanor traffic offenses like reckless driving under MCL 257.626 or OWI under MCL 257.625, the record also includes the criminal charge details, any plea entered, the sentence, and any probation or license conditions the court ordered. Felony traffic cases go to the Grand Traverse County Circuit Court and are kept in that court's separate records.
Note: Driver's license points are not part of the court file. The Secretary of State tracks points separately based on what the court reports after a conviction or finding of responsibility.

Responding to a Traffic Ticket in Grand Traverse County
A civil infraction ticket issued in Grand Traverse County gives you 14 days to respond. Your options and the deadline are on the ticket itself. Do not ignore it. The 86th District Court will enter a default judgment, the Secretary of State adds points, and the court can refer your case for license suspension.
Three options are available. You can admit responsibility and pay the fine listed on the ticket. That closes the case with no hearing required. You can admit responsibility with an explanation by writing to the magistrate, who may reduce the fine after reviewing your statement. Points still apply even if the fine drops. Or you can deny responsibility and request a hearing. Two types exist: an informal hearing before a magistrate where attorneys are not typically involved, and a formal hearing before a judge where the issuing officer must be present and legal counsel is allowed. If you lose at the informal level, you have 7 days to request a formal hearing.
Michigan courts cannot take traffic infractions under advisement or withhold judgment. There is no statewide diversion program. The 86th District Court may have first-time offender options or other programs worth asking about. Call (231) 995-6060 before your deadline to find out what is available.
Note: A court-approved driver improvement course after a conviction may lead the Secretary of State to remove points from your driving record. That is a separate process from the court case and does not change what is on file with the 86th District Court.

Points and Driving Records in Grand Traverse County
Michigan's point system is controlled entirely by the Secretary of State. When the 86th District Court reports a conviction or civil infraction finding, the Secretary of State applies the matching points to the driver's record. The court does not assign points directly and has no ability to remove them once they are assessed.
Here is how points break down under Michigan law:
- 6 points: OWI (MCL 257.625), reckless driving, fleeing police, leaving an accident scene, vehicular manslaughter
- 5 points: Speeding 16 or more mph over the posted limit
- 4 points: Speeding 11 to 15 mph over the limit
- 3 points: Speeding 1 to 10 mph over, disobeying a traffic signal, improper passing, failing to stop for a school bus
- 2 points: All other moving violations
Accumulating 12 points within any two-year period triggers a mandatory reexamination by the Secretary of State. That can result in license restrictions, additional testing, or suspension. To check your current point total and full driving record, visit michigan.gov/sos or call (517) 322-1624. The 86th District Court in Grand Traverse County handles the local case. Everything tied to your license belongs to the Secretary of State.
