Ottawa County Courts - Traffic Records

The Ottawa County Courts handle traffic violations for the entire county, including Grand Haven, Holland, Zeeland, Hudsonville, and all surrounding townships. The county runs a dedicated courts website at ottawacountycourts.org, which provides information on court services, office hours, and how to deal with traffic cases. Ottawa County follows the standard Michigan district court structure, with district courts taking primary jurisdiction over traffic infractions and misdemeanors. More serious traffic charges can move to the circuit court level.

The county has its own online payment portal at ottawacourts.webtecsinc.com/circuit. This handles eligible circuit and district court fine payments and is separate from the state's ePAY platform. Check both when you need to pay a fine, since availability varies by case type. The main Ottawa County Michigan website also has general county services information and links to departments including the courts.

Ottawa County runs along the Lake Michigan shoreline in western Michigan. Major routes like US-31, M-45, and M-104 see regular traffic enforcement. The courts process a significant number of citations each year from both local commuter traffic and seasonal visitors.

Responding to a Traffic Ticket in Ottawa County

Citations issued in Ottawa County go to the district court that covers the location of the stop. You have 14 days to respond. Michigan law gives you three choices: admit, admit with an explanation, or deny. Ignoring the ticket results in a default judgment, which carries the same consequences as a conviction, including points and potential suspension.

Admitting means you accept the violation and pay the fine. The case closes but points go on your record. Admitting with an explanation means you appear before a magistrate to describe the circumstances. The violation still stands, but the magistrate may reduce the fine. Denying means you request a hearing. Informal hearings involve no attorneys and the officer does not attend. You and the magistrate review the facts. Formal hearings bring in the citing officer, and you or your attorney can question them and present evidence. Criminal traffic matters like OWI under MCL 257.625 and reckless driving go through the formal hearing process from the start.

Points are set by state law and cannot be changed by Ottawa County courts. Six points apply to OWI, reckless driving, fleeing a police officer, leaving the scene of a crash, and negligent homicide. Five points for speeding 16 mph or more over the limit. Four for 11 to 15 over. Three for 1 to 10 over, failing to stop for a school bus, improper passing, and certain signal violations. Two points for most other moving violations. At 12 points within two years, the Michigan Secretary of State requires a driver reexamination. The SOS number is 517-322-1624.

What Ottawa County Traffic Records Show

An Ottawa County traffic case record captures the entire history of a case. It starts with the citation: the date of the stop, the location, the officer's name, and the charge or infraction code. Every step after that is logged in the docket, from notices sent to the person, to any hearings held, to the final disposition. The disposition shows how it ended: paid, dismissed, or decided at a hearing.

Fine amounts and payment history may appear in the file. For criminal traffic matters like OWI or reckless driving, the record also shows any plea entered, the conviction, and the sentence the court imposed. The court record does not include your driver's license point total. The Secretary of State manages that separately after the court reports the conviction.

Note: Court records in Michigan are public by default, but some information, including dates of birth, is restricted from online public access under MCR 8.119.
