What Clinton Township Traffic Records Contain

Traffic court records from the 41B District Court show detailed information about each case. Civil infraction records include the citation number, the date and location of the alleged violation, the specific charge (such as speeding, failure to yield, or improper lane change), and the final outcome. If a hearing was held, the record lists the date, the judge or magistrate assigned, and whether the infraction was upheld, reduced, or dismissed. Fines ordered and points assessed to the driver's record are also part of the case docket.

Misdemeanor traffic records contain more. They include the charge, arraignment date, bond amount, all scheduled hearing dates, and the final disposition. If a sentence was imposed, the record shows the fine, any probation terms, and any jail time ordered. Warrant history tied to the case is also public. OWI cases under MCL 257.625 show the full criminal proceeding from start to finish. These records stay on file at the court unless expunged under Michigan's Clean Slate law.

Note: Date of birth is never visible in MiCOURT public results. Expunged and sealed cases will not show up in any public search, regardless of the portal used.

Responding to a Clinton Township Traffic Citation

If you get a traffic citation in Clinton Township, you have 14 days to respond. The three options are: admit the violation, admit with an explanation, or deny the charge. Admitting means you pay the full fine and accept the points that come with it. Admitting with an explanation means you get to speak to a judge or magistrate before the final decision. The court may reduce the fine, but it cannot change the points if the violation is upheld. Denying the charge sends the case to a hearing.

Hearings at the 41B District Court can be informal or formal. Informal hearings do not involve attorneys. Formal hearings allow both sides to have legal representation. If you miss the 14-day window and do not respond, the court enters a default judgment. That triggers fines, points on your driving record, and possible license suspension by the Secretary of State. The court then notifies the Secretary of State of the conviction. Reinstatement after a suspension requires paying a fee and meeting any other conditions set by that agency.

Traffic citations cannot be taken under advisement at the 41B District Court, and judges cannot waive or alter points set by the Michigan Vehicle Code. The point values are fixed in state law and apply to every court in Michigan.

Points and Your Driving Record

Michigan uses a point system tied to your driving record. When you are found responsible for a traffic violation, points are added based on the offense. OWI under MCL 257.625, reckless driving, fleeing a police officer, and leaving the scene of an accident each carry 6 points. Speeding 16 mph or more over the limit is 5 points. Going 11 to 15 mph over is 4 points. Going 1 to 10 mph over, running a red light, and improper passing are each 3 points. Most other moving violations add 2 points.

Reach 12 points within any two-year period and the Michigan Secretary of State will require a driver reexamination. The Secretary of State manages all driving records and can be reached at 517-322-1624 or through michigan.gov/sos. Points stay on your record for two years from the date of the violation. The 41B District Court cannot remove or reduce points. That is handled by the Secretary of State through the passage of time only.

Note: To check your current point total, order a copy of your driving record through the Michigan Secretary of State's website or at any SOS branch office in person.
