Macomb County District Courts for Traffic Cases

Three district courts handle traffic matters in Macomb County. Your citation will show which court you need to contact. Each court covers a specific set of cities and townships, so the location of the violation determines where your case is filed.

The 37th District Court in Warren handles all traffic cases from Warren and Center Line. It is located at 8300 Common Road, Warren, MI 48093. The main phone number is 586-574-4900, and the traffic division can be reached at 586-574-4932. Warren is the most populous city in Macomb County, which makes the 37th one of the busier district courts in the area.

The 41B District Court serves Clinton Township and handles roughly 45,000 cases each year. It sits at 22380 Starks Drive, Clinton Township, MI 48036, main phone 586-469-9300. For traffic questions, press 5 when you call. You can also reach the traffic division by email at traffic@41bcourt-mi.us. Three judges sit on the 41B bench: Sebastian Lucido, Carrie Lynn Fuca, and Jacob Femminineo Jr. Magistrate Ryan Zemke also handles matters there. The court uses Zoom for some traffic and arraignment hearings; the Zoom meeting ID is 843-970-5882 for those proceedings.

The 41A District Court serves Sterling Heights from 40111 Dodge Park Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, phone 586-446-2500. It also maintains a Shelby Township division at 52420 Van Dyke, Shelby Township, MI 48316, phone 586-739-7325. If your citation was issued in Shelby Township, make sure you contact or appear at the Shelby Township location rather than the Sterling Heights address. The 16th Circuit Court handles felony-level traffic offenses for all of Macomb County and can be reached at 586-469-7400.

Responding to a Macomb County Traffic Ticket

When you receive a traffic citation anywhere in Macomb County, you have 14 days to respond. The citation will list your options: admit responsibility, admit with explanation, or deny responsibility. Missing the deadline can result in a default judgment against you.

Admitting responsibility means you pay the fine shown on the ticket and accept the associated points on your driving record. No court date is needed. Michigan assigns points by violation type. Operating while intoxicated under MCL 257.625 carries 6 points, the highest level. Speeding 16 or more mph over the limit adds 5 points. The 11 to 15 mph range adds 4 points. Going 1 to 10 mph over, running a traffic signal, improper passing, and school bus violations each add 3 points. Other moving violations generally add 2 points. Courts in Michigan cannot change these point values or hold a case under advisement to spare a driver from receiving points.

Denying responsibility leads to either an informal or formal hearing. The informal process is quick. There are no attorneys, no strict rules, and no formal procedures. The magistrate hears from you and from the citing officer. The formal process involves a judge, permits attorneys, and follows more structure. If the officer does not appear at a formal hearing, the case is generally dismissed. Choosing denial is the only way to fully contest the ticket and potentially avoid both the fine and the points.

Admitting with explanation lets you speak to a judge, but judgment is still entered and points still attach. This path does not reduce points or reduce the fine. It simply puts your explanation on the record.

Note: Accumulating 12 or more points within a 2-year period will trigger a mandatory reexamination of your driving skills by the Michigan Secretary of State.

Getting Copies of Macomb County Traffic Records

Each Macomb County district court handles its own records. To get a copy of a case file, go to or contact the court where the case was filed. Bring your case number if you have it. Staff can pull the file and let you know what documents are available and what they cost.

Michigan's copy fee rules under MCL 600.2543 set the rates for all courts statewide. Regular copies cost $1 per page. A certified copy costs $10 for the first page plus $1 per additional page. If you need a transcript of a hearing, rates are $3.75 per page with a $50 minimum. These apply at all three Macomb County district courts.

FOIA requests for administrative records go to the Macomb County FOIA coordinator at 1 South Main Street, 8th Floor, Mount Clemens, MI 48043. Courts have 5 business days to respond under MCL 15.231. For specific case documents, contacting the clerk directly is almost always faster than filing a FOIA request.
